Desperately seeking Susan

Yes, it’s a title of a not-so-great movie, starring none other than Madonna. And yes, Susan was the second most popular name given to baby girls in the late 1950s. Susan is also a word proposed by our content designer Pinja as a substitute to the overused word ‘digitalization’. From now on I prefer Susan.

And as Pinja puts it, technology has a lot to do with the change today but is only a part of the solution. In our line of work, and I guess in all lines of work nowadays, change is both a constant and a factor for success. But change is hard. After all the books and blog posts you’ve read and seminars you’ve attended, making actual change is difficult since we are biased toward the status quo.

We change as a company all the time. And we are helping our clients change. So we are used to working with Susan. If you’ve been nervous around Susan before, you need to change your attitude. Yes, Susan can seem a bit intimidating and sometimes she’s all over the place, but once you get to know her she will be a great friend. And let’s admit it: she’s not going away.

So how do we work with Susan? We introduce her to different people in your organization and discuss how people see her. Being true to Pinja’s no-bs attitude: we try to understand businesses and people, talk, find out real problems, create ideas for solutions, and test them. Some of them will work, some will not. But that’s how life is with Susan.

Are you still talking about digitalization? Please stop.

If I got to choose one word to be eliminated from the collective vocabulary of every marketing professional everywhere, it would be ‘digitalization’. Here’s why.
